Poetry Is Not Dead

Students in this course will be engaging with contemporary poetry, re-imagining what it means to be a poet and receive copies of some of the best recent poetry collections, including Calling a Wolf a Wolf by Kaveh Akbar and The Crown Ain't Worth Much by Hanif Willis Abdurraqib. We will those books plus recent work from poets such as Danez Smith, Chen Chen, Eve Ewing, and more. Students will be guided in explorations of poetry published since 2016. Students will also be focusing on creating new work and finding their place in the living poetry landscape. Exercises will be focuses on traditional poetry form, non-traditional form, and how archaic forms can be re-vitalized in the contemporary world. The first class will focus on introductions and structure, the second class will discuss and focus on readings assigned, and the final class will review work that has been produced and focus on the critique and sharing of the work.

John McCracken is a poet and freelance writer from Madison, WI whose work has appeared in OCCULUM, Drunk in a Midnight Choir, Pressure Gauge Journal, and more. His work is also forthcoming on the side of a Madison Metro Transit Bus. He is a Staff Reviewer for Glass: A Journal of Poetry and provides culture and arts coverage for Tone Madison
