Theme: Nasty Women Reading
Special Benefit for Planned Parenthood
Reading: Saturday, March 18, 2017 at 8 PM
Place: ALL, 2021 Winnebago St, Madison, WI
Submission deadline: February 3, 2016
There are people who are more afraid of a woman with a choice or a girl with a book than they are of a man with a gun. We want your poems that speak to the relationship between women and power, women and agency. We want angry, funny, startling, fresh work about real women’s lives, about real women’s struggles, defeats and victories. Most of all, we want women who know how to wield their most powerful weapon—their voices. Please note: This reading will benefit Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin; readers are welcome to submit work that relates to health issues, but need not restrict themselves to that.
Please send 4 – 6 poems or a short prose piece (one that can be read out loud in about 7-10 minutes) on the theme ALONG WITH a 50 to 75-word bio, IN THE BODY OF AN E-MAIL to <literature AT artlitlab DOTorg> by February 3, 11:59 p.m. We will make every effort to inform those chosen of our decision by February 10. Although we can't afford to pay readers, this is a great opportunity to sell books and read with other talented people in a very special environment.
Selections will be made with an eye to assembling a program that represents a diversity of poets, styles, and approaches to the theme.
Selected poets and writers MUST be available to read in person.
This event is sponsored by Union Hair Parlor (http://www.unionhairparlor.com). All donations at the event will go to Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin (https://www.plannedparenthood.org/planned-parenthood-wisconsin).
