Dikeman, Townkeepers, Piazza, Shead

Adam Shead (Dave Rempis, Tim Daisy, Mary Oliver) brings his new quartet with Amsterdam's John Dikeman (William Parker, Tatsuya Nakatani, Cactus Truck) and Casper Townkeepers (Han Bennink, Ken Vandermark, Terrie Ex) along with Chicago bassist Tony Piazza to Arts & Literature Laboratory. John Dikeman

John Dikeman is an American saxophonist currently residing in Amsterdam. John grew up in Wyoming and started performing professionally at the age of 16. Dikeman left Wyoming in 1999 to study saxophone and composition at the prestigious Interlochen Arts Academy. John later attended Bennington College in Vermont to study with Milford Graves while at the same time studying privately with the late Joe Maneri. After Bennington, John moved to Boston, then New York City and Philadelphia. While on the east coast John performed extensively with many of the top musicians from the USA including Nate Wooley, Mike Pride, Daniel Carter, Tatsuya Nakatani. Since moving to Amsterdam, Dikeman has performed with Joe McPhee, Jeb Bishop, Han Bennink, members of The Ex, Roy Campbell, Ab Baars, and many others. John has been very active in the Dutch improvised music scene as both a performer and curator.

Casper Townkeepers

Casper Townkeepers (Tilburg, the Netherlands, 1989) is a guitarist and bassist based in Amsterdam. He’s performed music on stage since the age of 8. He is an active member of the international improvised music circuit. He is a co-founder of the bands Cactus Truck (with John Dikeman and Onno Govaert), Stadhouders/Govaert/De Joode Trio and two duos with percussionists Dag Erik Knedal Andersen and Nicolas Field. He is also part of such diverse bands as Spinifex and Lily’s Déjà Vu, next to playing countless of ad hoc improv shows. Jasper also occasionally works in the fields of dance, theatre and contemporary composed music.

 

Tony Piazza

Tony Piazza holds a BA in Jazz Studies from Columbia College Chicago and is long time collaborator with drummer Adam Shead, performing alongside him at The Chicago Jazz Festival as well as in such groups as Dod Kalm, the Columbia Improvised Music Ensemble,and the Adam Shead String Quartet. Tony has also performed alongside such musicians as Josh Berman, Dustin Laurenzi, Benny Green, Dave Douglas, Mykelle Deville, and Gerald Clayton.

Adam Shead, who holds a BM in Percussion Performance from Columbia College Chicago, Graduate Certificate in World Performance Studies, and MM in Improvisation from The University of Michigan specializes in interdisciplinary performance, composition, and improvisation. Adam has performed at renowned music festivals such as The Chicago Jazz Festival, The Ann Arbor Edge Fest, and The Present is Present Festival in Amsterdam. Adam has performed alongside such musicians as Mary Oliver, Andrew Drury, John Dikeman, Jasper Stadhouders, Tim Daisy, Josh Berman, Ed Sarath, Dave Rempis, Ada Rave, Benny Green, and John Hollenbeck.
