Head Space

The past two years have been a time of forced introspection, deep despair, ignited passions, and renewed manifestations of hope. Jill W. Pfeiffer is a self described over thinker. Navigating the pandemic through work-life, parenting, family loss, and deep passion for a more healed world, she found herself retreating to the studio for moments of quiet, respite and exploration.

Over the past two decades, Jill has predominantly worked on three dimensional sculptures. However, a blue “Haring-esque” paper figure created in 1993 emerged while cleaning the basement. During the pandemic, it felt important to give this isolated paper figure a more permanent place in the current history. Therefore, a two dimensional piece was born, titled “Perspective,” which encapsulates the figure under a layer of resin. The simple act of painting the background in color blocks and line art, provided a focal point for the artist’s ever-busy mind. Exploring this new art form created a calming effect in a “head space” plagued by both the gift and curse of being a true empath during such tumultuous times. The emotions can be relentless. More two dimensional works followed and while the shapes lack complexity, the artist invites the viewer to look closer and ask what is emerging from the juxtaposed elements. The idea of juxtaposition has been further explored through the connection between two and three dimensional works and ultimately, a head space, for us to explore inner thoughts during a time of pandemic and reckoning.

I am passionate about social justice and earth justice and share a deep connection to the natural world, while possessing a strong belief in revolutionary love. Much of my work towards these efforts requires my time and attention, leaving me less time for creativity. In the studio, I find calm, quiet and peace. The dirtier my hands get, the more respite I find.

By using clay, I feel a connection to the earth, the soil, unspoiled and pristine. I am reminded of the interconnectedness of all things. With this medium, I construct animals, faces, and imagery relating to organic forms of nature and humankind. Clay is forgiving; it can be built upon. One can use its dust and pieces as tools in the process. The clay “... Read More
