Emma Lister

I received my formal education from Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois (class of 2017) where I completed a major in Studio Art. My time at Knox was peppered with stints at artist residencies in places such as the Chautauqua Institution (2015) and the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture (2017). Last year, I had the opportunity to apprentice with South Carolina face-jug artist and expert Peter Lenzo. I have continued this practice of making since moving back to the Midwest, seeking to both hone my craft skills and continue to explore the complex and ever evolving nature of this art form and what it says about race and racism, cultural appropriation, and culture/identity-making in our country. I seek to critically examine my identity as a queer, white-identifying, gender-deviant artist as well as to play a role in the questioning and dismantling of our capitalist society and elitist art markets, which heedlessly demand and insatiably consume creative work and workers without valuing who we truly are or comprehending the wide reaching possibilities and implications of our work.
