Arts + Literature Laboratory presents A fragile unfolding, a show by Meg Mitchell, open from January 22 through March 27, 2027 alongside concurrent solo exhibitions The Forest Belongs To Everyone, But It Is Not Yours by Ren LaDassor, and We Are Worth Saving by Ciel Skål. There will be an opening reception on Friday, January 22.
This multimedia, immersive installation centers on a digital experience, building a virtual environment that complements and enhances tangible objects in the physical space. The gallery represents floating platforms in the virtual realm through wall-mounted thread installations and small sculptural objects displayed on shelves. By letting these objects transition seamlessly between virtual and physical spaces, Mitchell prompts viewers to reflect on their physical, mental, and emotional lives while exploring themes of isolation, comfort, and agency within a given space.
Meg Mitchell received a BFA in Sculpture from the University of South Florida in 2005 and an MFA in New Genres from the University of Maryland College Park in 2008. She is currently an Associate Professor of Digital Media in the Department of Art at UW-Madison. Mitchell has shown her work in numerous group and solo exhibitions, at venues such as the Museum for Applied Art in Vienna, the Atlantic Center for the Arts, Conner Contemporary, the DC Art Center and the International Waldkunst Zentrum in Germany. Her work has been featured in numerous publications, such as Art Papers, Art in America and the Washington Post. In 2012 she was also awarded a Expanded Artist’s Book grant from Columbia College Chicago for her project in collaboration with Denise Bookwalter, “Rain/fall,” a data driven artist’s book and mobile application.
