Chele Ramos | Shades of the Mind

Arts + Literature Laboratory presents Shades of the Mind, an exhibition by Chele Ramos, on display from Tuesday, November 18 through Saturday, December 20, 2025. This exhibition is part of the Bridge Work Madison program.

An opening reception for all current exhibitions will be held on Saturday, November 22, 2025 from 5:00pm to 8:00pm.

Project Statement:

Shades of the Mind is an intimate exploration of mental health through my own lived experience. This body of work—comprised of 15 self-portraits—captures moments of contemplation, emotional intensity, internal chaos, quiet clarity, and healing. Each piece uses color, light, composition, and material to express a different facet of my inner world.

These portraits are not just images of myself—they are glimpses into the ever-shifting landscape of the mind. My hope is that by sharing my own mental and emotional journey, I invite you into a space where you can reflect on your own.

The mind is not linear. Healing is not a simple destination. There is an ebb and flow to all things, especially our emotional and mental states. To heal, we must first feel—deeply, honestly, and without shame. For me, creating and sharing are essential parts of that process. This work stands as a testimony to the complexity of being human, and the quiet courage it takes to understand ourselves.

Artist Chele Ramos

Chele Ramos is a Madison-raised, self-taught portrait artist whose work explores human emotion, identity, and mental health awareness through expressive realism. She began painting in 2016 after years of drawing, finding in portraiture a way to capture both vulnerability and strength. Chele has exhibited her work in numerous Madison-area venues, including Common Wealth Gallery, American Feral Gallery and The Overture Center for the Arts to name a few. She has also participated in local art markets and community events such as Dane Arts Buy Local and the LOUD’s Latino Art Fair. In addition to her studio practice, Chele has taught workshops and youth art classes in the Madison area, including watercolor and portrait painting at Atwood Atelier, Carnelian Gallery, Art Lit Lab, and Art Hub. When she’s not painting, she enjoys spending time with her family, exploring nature, and finding inspiration in the everyday connections that shape her work.
