Open House: Emma Dayhuff Trio

Arts + Literature Laboratory's Open House Weekend closes with live jazz by the Emma Dayhuff Trio on Sunday, November 14, 2021 at 7:00pm. Don't miss this special concert featuring two recent graduates of the prestigious Herbie Hancock Institute of of Jazz Performance (formerly the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance) - band leader Emma Dayhuff on bass and Lenard Simpon on saxophone - along with Chicago-based guitarist Matt Gold. Free admission (donations appreciated). Doors open at 6:30pm. 

Emma Dayhuff

Bassist Emma Dayhuff makes her first appearance in our series, leading a trio that mixes soulful lyricism with adventurous experimentation. Emma is the most recent bassist to graduate from the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz Performance and is the fifth woman to ever participate in the prestigious program. Emma has had opportunities to share the stage and the recording studio with Herbie Hancock, David Murray, Jeff Parker, Kahil El Zabar, Gretchen Parlato, Robert Irving III, Patricia Barber, Victor Goines, Nicole Mitchell, and Willie Pickens.

Originally from Bozeman, Montana, she left home to attend the Oberlin Conservatory of Music where she studied with Peter Dominguez, Eddie Gomez, and Billy Hart. Lenard Simpson Saxophonist

Lenard Simpson is a saxophonist, composer and educator from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. After completing high school, Lenard went on to pursue a bachelors in Jazz performance at Northern Illinois University. In 2018, Lenard was selected by a panel of Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, James Newton and Ambrose Akinmusire to be a member of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance, which has since been renamed in honor of Herbie Hancock. After finishing his master’s degree with the Institute, Lenard moved to Chicago where he remains an active performer and educator playing with artists such as Marquis Hill and Kurt Elling. 

Matt Gold Guitarist

Matt Gold is a guitarist and composer based in Chicago, IL. His work pulls from diverse traditions of electric and acoustic music. Matt has given his guitar a good strum or two in venues across North America, Europe, and Asia, and has written music for films as well. His work has been praised for being “accessible, yet healthily unconstrained by genre and sure of its own identity” (UK Vibe) and for "combining the virtuosity and precision of a string quartet with the playfulness of small-group jazz" (Chicago Reader). In May 2020 Gold released his first solo record, Imagined Sky (Whirlwind Recordings), displaying his penchant for concise melody and a nuanced, exploratory palette of abstracted Americana. He has released four albums as the instrumental duo Sun Speak (with drummer Nate Friedman) and one with the singer/songwriter duo Storm Jameson (with vocalist/guitarist Jim Tashjian).
