Opening Reception for January Shows: Randall Berndt, Beth Racette, Richie Morales, + Roundhouse Group Show

Arts + Literature Laboratory will hold an opening reception for new art exhibitions on Saturday, January 10, 2026, from 5:00pm to 7:00pm. Free admission. At 6:00pm there will be an artist talk by Beth Racette and Bert Zippered regarding "Diastole & Systole" in Gallery 2.

Our latest round of exhibitions feature artists Randall Berndt in Gallery 1, Beth Racette and Richie Morales in Galleries 2 + 3, and 27 members of Roundhouse Studios for a Group Show encompassing the Reception Gallery and the Third Floor Gallery.

All three exhibitions opened January 2, and will remain on display through February 21, 2026.

Berndt's exhibition, Stories: Words & Images, features works from the artist's book of the same name, providing a retrospective view of Randall Berndt's rich practice. In the book and exhibition, Berndt embraces the marriage of image and text, creating what he describes as something like "elaborate cartoons that have need of elaborate captions."

Morales and Racette's joint exhibition, Diastole & Systole: A Pulse of Lifeinvites us to immerse ourselves in the beauty that persists despite the shadows outside and within us. The exhibition reflects on our human condition and Earth’s fragility, highlighting the need to live in harmony, and to build a more just and compassionate world.

The group show Pulling Together: Work from Madison's Roundhouse Studios spotlights the diverse community of creators working together in one of the city’s newest creative hubs, a complex of 40 artist studios which opened in January of 2025.

Randall Berndt is the former assistant curator at the James Watrous Gallery at the Overture Center for the Arts and was for years the director of the Wisconsin Academy Gallery in Madison, Wisconsin. He received an MFA in painting from UW-Madison in 1969 and has pursued the life of the artist mixed with the demands of the "real world" ever since. Some career highlights include a major award for a painting accepted into the Butler Institute of American Art's 62nd Annual Midyear Exhibition, a 1996 Wisconsin Arts Board Visual Arts Fellowship and participation in the Madison Art Center's 1987 Triennial Exhibition. Berndt's paintings were juried into New American Paintings, Number 29 an exhibition in print published by Open Studios Press, Wellesley, MA, in 2000. In 2006 his paintings and drawings were included in the West Bend Art Museum's group exhibition Up North: Imaging North Woods Culture & Mythology.

Beth Racette is a visual artist and cultural worker who works in many mediums - acrylic ink paintings, sculpture and installation. Underlying themes in her work are flow (i.e. history, societal resources, biology and life processes, contagion, inspiration and communication) and interconnection. She has been working on the Gaia painting series since 2012. Her goal when she makes art is to utilize and integrate her entire self. Beth grew up in Wichita, Kansas and received her Masters of Fine Art in 1989 from Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University.

Richie Morales

Originally from Guatemala, I am a self-taught painter who does not hesitate in my stroke. I explore the accident as a form of communion with the unknown and regularly reflect about the role of art in social justice. Since childhood, I have experimented with textures and materials while working in trades of wood and construction work. Now I integrate this knowledge in my painting. My life is marked by signs of socio-economical violence as well as with legacies of personal and community resilience.
