What's Going On?

The Dan Cavanagh Quartet kicks off the Summer Sunday series at Allen Centennial Garden as part of the 2024 Madison Jazz Festival. Director of the Mead-Witter School of Music at UW-Madison, keyboardist Dan Cavanagh offers an engaging, sophisticated sound and skillful improvisation reminiscent of jazz great Brad Mehldau. Joining Cavanagh will be Russ Johnson (trumpet), Peter Dominguez (bass), and Dave Bayless (drums).

Dan Cavanagh is a composer and pianist who has garnered numerous awards in both areas. As a composer he has written or arranged for Latin Grammy-winning AfroBop Alliance, the legendary Patti LaBelle, and a wide range of classical and jazz performers across North America and Europe. He is the Pamela O. Hamel/Music Board of Advisors Chair, Director of the School of Music, Professor of Jazz Studies and Composition at the University of Wisconsin Madison.

He has released five critically acclaimed jazz CDs as a leader. His music can be heard on many other recordings both classical and jazz and he continues to be commissioned and programmed around the world. Cavanagh has also performed extensively in North America and internationally. He has been a finalist in the EuropaFest Jazz Contest in Bucharest, and in the Jacksonville Jazz Festival Piano Competition.

Russ Johnson

Trumpeter Russ Johnson is a recent Midwest transplant after spending 23 years as an important member of New York City’s jazz community. He has seven recordings as a leader or co-leader and performed on more than 75 recordings as a sideman. Russ has worked alongside many of the legendary figures in jazz including Lee Konitz, Steve Swallow, Bill Frisell, and Joe Lovano. In addition, he has recorded and/or performed with a long list of the most prominent musicians currently on the international jazz scene, including Myra Melford, Ken Vandermark, and Tony Malaby. Russ has performed in more than 40 countries across the globe. His groups have recently performed at the Chicago, Winter Jazz Fest (NYC) Hyde Park, (Chicago) and Bergamo, (Italy) jazz festivals.

His most recent recordings, Meeting Point (Relay Recordings) and Still Out To Lunch! (Enja Records) received 4 1/2 & 4 stars respectively from Down Beat Magazine and appeared on many "Best Recordings of 2014/5" lists... Read More

Peter Dominguez Bassist

Peter Dominguez grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin participating in the Music for Youth Orchestras, and performing with his father, pianist and singer Frank DeMiles. His teachers included Willard Feldman and Clyde Russell. Peter went on to study with Roger Ruggeri and Richard Davis at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, where he earned his baccalaureate and masters degrees with a teaching assistantship 1980-82.

In 1981 he was the first recipient of the Milton J. Hinton scholarship competition award.  A teaching assistantship and doctoral studies with Dr. Lucas Drew at the University of Miami, Coral Gables followed in 1982-84. Eventually securing positions in both the Florida Philharmonic and Michigan State University, Peter chose MSU, served as Professor of Double Bass and Jazz Studies 1984-96, and was instrumental in developing their Jazz Studies program.  During his Michigan years, he continued studies with Robert Gladstone and performed with the Detroit Symphony.

Drummer Dave Bayles

Dave Bayles has worked with such jazz artists as Bruce Barth, Peter Bernstein, Rick Germanson, Slide Hampton, Barry Harris, Brian Lynch, Jack McDuff, Bob Mintzer, Frank Morgan, James Moody, Melvin Rhyne, Charles McPherson, Rich Perry, John Swana, Dan Trudel, Ernie Watts and Steve Wiest. He has performed at many jazz venues in Chicago, Philadelphia, Pittsburg, Milwaukee, New York City and Washington D.C. 

Recording credits include the Luis Diaz Quintet (On the Edge), Curt Hanrahan Quintet (Hang Time), the Juli Wood Quintet (Movin' and Groovin'), Steve Wiest Big Band (Excalibur), We Six (Bird Say and Vivid Dreams), Jeanne Woodall (It's Never Too Late), Eric Jacobson (Blues March), Paul Silbergleit (The Hidden Standard) and the Hal Leonard Corporation (jazz education series). Dave's latest recording, Dave Bayles Trio Live at the Uptowner (Calligram Records) was released in early November 2023.
