Douglas Haynes + Las Hijas del Maíz Nicaraguan Dance Troupe
This event launches Madison writer Douglas Haynes’s narrative nonfiction book, Every Day We Live Is the Future: Surviving in a City of Disasters. This intimate, cautionary tale of urban inequality and the human impacts of climate change recounts the true stories of two Nicaraguan families’ quests to survive in Managua, one of the world’s most disaster-prone cities.
Author Bill McKibben calls Every Day We Live Is the Future, “a vivid and gritty account of life in the kind of urban shantytown where a huge percentage of humanity lives . . . A crucial read.”
Haynes will read from his book followed by Las Hijas del Maíz from Managua, performing traditional Nicaraguan dances in beautiful handmade dresses.
Douglas Haynes is a nonfiction writer and poet whose work has appeared in Orion, Virginia Quarterly Review, Longreads, Boston Review, and many other publications. His poetry chapbook Last Word is forthcoming from Finishing Line Press. He teaches writing at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh.
Las Hijas del Maíz Nicaraguan Dance Troupe is a project of the non-profit organization Compas de Nicaragua, which promotes cultural exchange and sustainable community development in Nicaragua. Ana Narváez directs the group, which includes Francis Argüello, Bianka Gurdian, Katerine Solorzano, Daniela Vargas, Litzy Juares, Teresa Jiménez, and Nicole Anduray.
