Kansas City Bop

Allen Iverson said, “I mean, listen, we’re talking about practice..."

can’t be late for practice, Roll Tide till die, War Eagle like a Tuskegee experiment

lynch-like toilet paper hanging from Tomer’s corner wrestle bear

pull turf from underneath knee, culture vulture, sing anthem like Willie Beaman

wear turnover chain like noose on Any Given Sunday

Russian roulette, plays each concussion, violence, sexual, violence, domestic

spin chamber, choke brain, spin chamber, choke brain, spin chamber, choke brain

"...not a game. Not... Not the game I go out there and die for..."

trapped inside padded helmet, buried alive, white elephants’

frozen tundra, odd-shaped balls

grip gloves, red leather, white stars, blue seams

protect the shield, shut up and dribble stick to sports

make lucid dreams come true

place pigskin, brown dirt, on caskets

"...and play every game like it’s my last!”

About the Author

Charles Payne Madison poet storyteller

Charles Payne won Arts + Literature Laboratory’s inaugural ALL Originals Prize for his poems "Dead End" and "Dinner with a Pig." This was his first national publication. Charles Payne is a Madison transplant, a certified teacher, and a self-taught social artist from Michigan. As a child, he loved hearing the sound of Paul Harvey's voice, their innate ability to describe every intricate detail truly inspired Charles to tell stories himself.
