Aplomb

On Saturday, October 12, 2019 at 3pm, Aplomb will perform at Arts + Literature Laboratory. Tickets are $12 in advance (https://aplomb-all.bpt.me/) and $15 at the door. Student tickets $5 off with a valid school ID. Advance ticket sales end 1 hour before the show. Doors open at 2:30pm

Aplomb is Eric Miller, viola da gamba, and Daniel Sullivan, harpsichord. Aplomb is dedicated to performance of chamber music from the 17th and 18th centuries, particularly the ravishing music composed in France during the first half of the 18th century.

François Couperin - Première Suite, Pièces de violes (1728)

C.P.E. Bach Sonate in C for Viola da Gamba Wq 136 (1745)

Domenico Scarlatti, Four Keyboard Sonatas (1685-1757)

 

Eric Miller, viola da gambist and cellist (baroque and modern), performs in Aplomb, ViolMedium (violmedium.org), and the Wisconsin Baroque Ensemble (wisconsinbaroque.org). A leader in promoting historical performance and the viola da gamba in Wisconsin, he directs the Madison Youth Viol Consort and has been on the faculty at the Madison Early Music Festival.  Eric studied cello at Northern Illinois University and the University of Wisconsin while teaching himself viola da gamba. Since that time,, he has taken lessons from masters such as Catharina Meints and Josh Lee which have greatly informed his playing. Eric recently released a recording of virtuosic works for solo viol by Le Sieur de Machy and Johannes Schenck, available through his website, www.millerstrings.com

 

Daniel Sullivan, harpsichord, is a graduate of Baldwin-Wallace College Conservatory in Cleveland, Ohio where he was a piano performance major studying with George Cherry. His interest, kindled in college, in the harpsichord led him to complete a Masters degree at Yale University where he studied with Albert Fuller. Subsequently, Dan lived in the Hague and studied harpsichord privately with Gustav Leonhardt. Early in the 80s, Dan moved to the Chicago area to pursue a Master of Management degree at Northwestern University. He quickly fell into the early music scene in Chicago playing with the Chicago Baroque Ensemble, Jubal's Lyre, and Basically Bach amongst other early music groups. Long involved in church music, Dan served at Bethel Presbyterian Church (OPC) in Wheaton, Illinois, and Westminster Presbyterian Church (PCA) in Elgin, Illinois, and at Christ Covenant Presbyterian (OPC) in Crystal Lake, Illinois.
