Arts + Literature Laboratory welcomes the LunART Festival 2023: Reimagine for a special panel discussion, Art & Heritage, on Wednesday, May 31, 2023 at 7:00pm. The discussion will address how heritage influences artistic expression with three vibrant women: June Millington (rock musician), Dorothy Chang (composer), and Rachel Werner (author). The discussion will be moderated by Suzan Kurry. Free admission.
The LunART Festival is devoted to highlighting the achievements of women artists from around the world, and this discussion promises to engage the audience in a relevant and timely exploration of how personal and cultural heritage informs our artistic endeavors.
About the panelists:
June Millington: The trailblazing Filipina-American guitarist co-founded the all-female rock band Fanny in the ‘70s. She is the co-founder and artistic director of the Institute for the Musical Arts (IMA) in Goshen, Massachusetts where she runs a Rock ‘n Roll program for girls.
Dorothy Chang: Described as "evocative and kaleidoscopic,” her compositions often embrace an eclectic mix of musical influences ranging from popular and folk music to elements of traditional Chinese music. Many of her works are inspired by place, time, memory and personal histories. She has a particular interest in cross-cultural and interdisciplinary collaboration, with projects involving mixed Chinese and Western ensembles, theater, movement, dance and video.
Rachel Werner: She is the founder of The Little Book Project WI as well as a teaching artist for Hugo House, Lighthouse Writers Workshop and The Loft Literary Center. Her debut cookbook Macro Cooking Made Simple (Chartwell Books) was released in April and her next kidlit book with Capstone, Moving and Grooving to Fillmore’s Beat will be released in Fall 2023.
