Experimental Films by Richard Tuohy and Dianna Barrie

Mills Folly Microcinema presents Experimental Films by Richard Tuohy and Dianna Barrie, on Wednesday, March 26 at 7:00pm. Admission $5.00, free for ALL members. Doors open at 6:30pm.

Australian filmmakers Richard Tuohy and Dianna Barrie are internationally renowned for their inventive 16mm filmmaking techniques, both in the camera and in the darkroom. Their films combine creativity, chemistry, invention and experimentation to culminate in a visceral synchronicity of form and content. In Australia, the pair founded and run Nanolab--part commercial Super8 lab, part alchemical artist playground. They also established the Artist Film Workshop, a cooperative, members-run lab in Melbourne.

Curated by Blake Barit. Program running time: 77.5 minutes. Format: Digital files

Seoul Electric by Richard Tuohy and Dianna Barrie

Seoul Electric | 2012 | 7 minutes
A North Asian metropolis. Electrical wires draped like thick webs adorn the streetscape. Explosive sparks of colour electrify the frame. Colourised during processing using coloured torch light.

Ginza Strip by Richard Tuohy and Dianna Barrie

Ginza Strip | 2014 | 9 minutes
The Ginza of fable and memory. This is the first film I have finished using the "Chromaflex" technique that we developed at Nanolab. This is a very much hands on colour developing procedure that allows selected areas of the film to be colour positive.

Pancoran by Richard Touhy and Dianna Barrie

Pancoran | 2017 | 9 minutes
Jakarta traffic moves with the harmonious chaos of complex self organising entities everywhere. Through contact printer matteing techniques this mass transport becomes denser and denser until only the fluid futility of motion/motionlessness remains. Jakarta traffic stands as proof of the paradox of motion.

China Not China by Richard Touhy and Dianna Barrie

China Not China | 2018 | 14 minutes
Hong Kong marked 20 years since its handover; just under half way through the planned 50 year 'one country, two systems' transition. Taiwan, once Imperial China, once Formosa, now ROC on the edge of the PRC. Multiple exposures of street scenes distort space and place creating a fluid sense of impermanence and transition, of two states somewhere between China and not China.

Valpi by Richard Tuohy and Dianna Barrie

Valpi | 2019 | 9 minutes
A city of brick, tin and board, rent by internal tectonics and sliding into the sea.

Like a Lighthouse by Richard Tuohy and Dianna Barrie

Like A Lighthouse | 2023 | 12 minutes
A blinding beam of light. The piercing sound of ships. Everything - the land, plants, the sky - shouts for attention. Perceptions assail us with their demands to be noticed.  This film is kind of a home movie of a 5 day hike to the southernmost tip of Australia.

Fear of Floating by Richard Touhy and Dianna Barrie

Fear of Floating | 2024 | 3.5 minutes
Humanity approaches in an ineluctable wave of uncertainty and hope. A ferry crossing in Mumbai stands here for all such places and times of human expansion and human vulnerability.

Land at Night by Richard Touhy and Dianna Barrie

The Land at Night | 2024 | 14 minutes
I used to find the dusk a very unsettling time, as though the approaching night was something to be feared.  It was as if, once night fell you could not flee, and had to face unspecified consequences. Maybe the land remembers and the night will reveal what we might have done...
