John Raymond: Kind Folk

New York-based jazz trumpeter John Raymond's collective quartet Kind Folk, featuring fellow New York-rising stars Alex LoRe (alto sax), Noam Wiesenberg (bass) and Colin Stranahan (drums), performs at Arts + Literature Laboratory on Saturday, September 15, 2018 at 8pm. The tour supports their first album for Fresh Sound New Talent that will be released in the Fall.

Tickets are $15 ahead of time at https://johnraymondskindfolk.bpt.me, or $20 at the door. Online ticket sales close 1 hour before the show. Doors open at 7:30pm.

John Raymond

With a singular voice on the trumpet and flugelhorn, John Raymond is been making his mark as one of the most promising, up-and-coming jazz musicians in the world. Recently voted a Rising Star Trumpeter in the Downbeat Magazine Critic's Poll, John has performed with some of most well-respected names in jazz including Billy Hart, Orrin Evans, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Ethan Iverson, and Linda Oh among others. Since 2012 John has released five albums, all of which have garnered critical acclaim from Stereogum, the New York Times, Downbeat Magazine and others. He has also been a featured artist at the FONT Festival and NYC Winter Jazz Fest, has been interviewed by The Gospel Coalition and WBGO “The Checkout,” and was a recipient of the 2015 ASCAP Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composer Award.

Alex LoRe

Noted by Ben Ratliff of the New York Times as a saxophonist who is “…making the connections among about 70 years’ worth of contemplative, articulate and light-toned players”, Manhattan-based saxophonist and composer Alex LoRe is one of the most in demand alto saxophonists on the current New York City jazz scene. Originally from Tarpon Springs, Florida, LoRe has been mentored by a “who’s who” of saxophonists, including Lee Konitz, George Garzone, Jerry Bergonzi, James Moody, and Steve Wilson to name a few.  Internationally acclaimed saxophonist and educator Bunky Green says LoRe “…will emerge to become one of the leading voices on the international jazz scene.” Saxophonist George Garzone describes his playing as “bold and unforgiving”, with “…a beautiful sound; he understands the concept of melody.” With a strong upbringing in classical music, LoRe’s playing and compositions are influenced by many genres, ranging from European classical music through today’s most influential artists... Noam Wiesenberg

Hailing from Tel Aviv, Noam Wiesenberg is a highly sought after bassist and arranger on the New York music scene. Noam was born into a music family, and exposed to many different genres at an early age. After 12 years of playing the cello, Noam switched his focus to the double bass at age 20. The first of several musical crossroads, he chose to focus on jazz because he was mesmerized by the musical capabilities of jazz musicians. Following this transition, he quickly became an integral part of the Israeli Jazz scene. His classical background informs both his composition and arranging, and has lead to collaborations with some of the top symphony orchestras in Israel, including The Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, The Israel Symphony Orchestra Rishon LeZion, The Haifa Symphony Orchestra, and the Israel Defense Force Education Unit Orchestra.

Colin Stranahan

Colin Stranahan attended the prestigious Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz at Loyola University in New Orleans, Louisiana. Stranahan was one of the winners of the 2012 Thelonious Monk Drum Competition. Now living in Brooklyn, New York, Colin is among the most sought-after drummers in the world working with such artists​ as Kurt Rosenwinkel, Jonathan Kreisberg, Fred Hersch, Terence Blanchard, Dave Kikoski, Kevin Hays, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter and many others. He is part of a collective trio featuring some of the most talented and praised young​ musicians in New York City. Stranahan currently holds adjunct teaching positions at ​the​ Aarhus Royal Academy of Music, and London's Royal Academy of Music.
