Arts and Literature Laboratory welcomes Oakwood Chamber Players on Sunday, December 10, at 2:00 pm, for a heartwarming afternoon of holiday music for winds, strings and harp. Tickets are $25 general admission, and $20 for students and seniors. Purchase advance tickets directly from the Oakwood Chamber Players website.
From reverent to tongue-in-cheek, Oakwood delights in mixing the traditional and the quirky, and sharing lesser-known musical masterpieces. Anchoring the program, Adolphus Hailstork’s (1941-) four movement work, “Songs of the Magi,” is romantic, yet contemporary, immersing the listener in the wonder and joy of the season. Hailstork, a celebrated African-American composer whose career spans five decades, draws influence from the choral tradition, and his music was performed at Joe Biden’s presidential inauguration in 2021.
Two medleys of old European carols will satisfy your cravings for the traditional and maybe even inspire a little Dickensian wassailing. Don’t worry - you’ll get a healthy dose of roasted-chestnut nostalgia with classics such as “Silver Bells” and “Christmastime is Here.” Plus, Ralph Vaughan-Williams’ “March of the Kitchen Utensils” will remind us all to keep a sense of humor when it comes to fruit cake and figgy pudding.
Join Oakwood for this seasonal tapestry of beloved holiday music and “soon-to-be” favorites!
