PROGRAM
"Miniatures" for flute, oboe, bassoon, and piano, by William Grant Still (1895-1978)
Quartet, Op. 1b for clarinet, viola, cello and piano, by Heinrich Kaminski (1886-1946)
"Limestone and Felt" for viola and cello, by Caroline Shaw (b. 1982)
"Four Bagatelles" for woodwind quartet, by Andrey Rubtsov (b. 1982)
William Grant Still (1895-1978), the first African-American to conduct and compose for a major orchestra in the United States, was influenced by a vast array of musical styles, from blues and jazz to spirituals and indigenous folk music. His Folk Suite No. 3 for woodwind trio and piano features two movements inspired by Peruvian folk music.
The program will feature two works by living composers who are currently taking the classical music world by storm. American composer Caroline Shaw (1982-) juxtaposes the percussive and lush capabilities of strings in her duet for viola and cello, Limestone and Felt. In his Four Bagatelles for Woodwind Quartet, Russian composer Andrey Rubstov (1982-) puts a jazzy spin on this light, playful genre often associated with Eastern European folk music.
In a rare combination of clarinet, viola, cello and piano, Heinrich Kaminski’s Quartet pivots between moments of zest to melancholy, with a theme and variations drawing from the Ruthenian folk song tradition.
