What's Going On?

Roscoe Mitchell is considered one of the key figures in avant-garde jazz, integrating influences from everywhere—world music, funk, rock, classical—to create music that is at once beautiful and complex. He has been involved with the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM), a Chicago-based nonprofit organization founded in the mid-1960s to advance new creative music. Mitchell has performed on more than 85 recordings and written in excess of 250 compositions in the jazz and classical realms. He continues to pass down his musical knowledge of composition and improvisation, both in educational and performance settings.

Douglas R. Ewart, Professor Emeritus at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, was born in Kingston, Jamaica, in 1946. His life and his wide-ranging work have always been inextricably associated with Jamaican culture, history, politics, and the land itself. Professor Ewart immigrated to Chicago in 1963, where he studied music theory at VanderCook College of Music, electronic music at Governors State University, and composition at the School of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians.

Vincent Davis is an internationally acclaimed jazz percussionist, composer and teacher. The seed of music was planted in Davis early on in life; growing up in a home filled with the influences of rock, jazz and gospel. In 1979 Davis left the Windy City to attend the Milwaukee Conservatory of Music, where his love of jazz and skill at drumming further bloomed and flourished. It was here, that Davis met his mentor Manty Ellis. Davis trained and studied with Ellis, primarily focusing on Jazz Trap drumming. The two began performing together, along with several other local musicians on the Milwaukee jazz scene. He was introduced to Roscoe Mitchell in 1985, became a touring musician and has been working with Roscoe Mitchell now for 25 years. Davis has toured all throughout the United States, Europe and Asia; playing events such as the Brussels Jazz Festival, Jazz Gallery Festival-Nicholsdorf, Austria, Wolf Trap- Washington D.C., Chicago Jazz Showcase Festival, North Sea Jazz Festival-Germany-Holland-Amsterdam, and Hothouse-Chicago, IL, just to name a few.

Junius Paul, composer, bandleader & acoustic and electric bassist, is a graduate of St. Xavier University (Chicago). An internationally established bassist, some of Junius' performance and/or recording credits include The Art Ensemble Of Chicago, numerous configurations of ensembles led by Roscoe Mitchell, Famoudou Don Moye Sun Percussion Summit, AACM Small Ensemble & Big Band, Kahil El’Zabar, Makaya McCraven, The Fred Anderson Trio, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Vincent Davis & Percussion Plus, Dee Alexander, The Curtis Fuller Quintet, Oliver Lake, Willie Pickens, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Marquis Hill, KRS-One and Donald Byrd among others. In 2013-14, Junius served as music department faculty for Trinity Christian College (Palos Heights, IL). In 2017, Junius was the featured artist and honoree for his alma mater, St. Xavier University’s Jazz Weekend. Junius' debut album, “Ism”, was released in November 2019 via International Anthem Recording Company to 4-Star acclaim in Downbeat Magazine.
