M.Rose Sweetnam (they/he/she) is a mixed media artist, educator, and organizer. They work primarily with collage and print, as well as embroidery, illustration, dance, video, photography, and found objects. Their collages are made from predominantly thrifted and repurposed materials. M is an undergraduate at UW-Madison majoring in Gender and Women’s Studies, along with LGBTQ+ Studies, Studio Art, Dance Therapy, and Education.
M.Rose grew up in Madison, WI and is passionate about community organizing and fighting white queer apathy. They currently reside in Madison, and are working on LGBTQ+ community care, mental health advocacy, youth education and empowerment, and mutual aid. M participates in a number of community organizations including LGBT Books to Prisoners, the Trans CARE Lab, and the Wisconsin Transgender Health Coaition, which build queer spaces and practice activism in and around LGBTQ+ identity and its many intersections. M is on the organizing team for Madison Community Fridges, a local mutual aid project. They also work at the Gender & Sexuality Campus Center as a student staff member in the role of Event and Accessibility Coordinator. They are passionate about destigmatizing mental illness and forging greater access to culturally competent mental health care for queer and trans folks. They believe our liberation is bound together (Lilla Watson), and that we all deserve the resources to not only survive but thrive (Maya Angelou).
M.Rose’s most recent artworks reflect an effort to transform their art practice from goal oriented back to a playful and restorative pursuit. Their art practice currently centers what sparks joy and curiosity, with bright surreal images of nature, queerness, fantasy, embodiment, and the internal process.
M is available for one-time workshops, a few consecutive weeks with a virtual pod, or long-term programs. This instructor has some availability on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
M.Rose is available for programs involving collage, illustration, art and social justice, art and identity, LGBTQ+ topics, movement/dance, graphic design, sewing and embroidery basics, artist journals, mixed media experimentation, zines and alternative publishing, abolitionist teaching/learning groups, consent and sex ed creative learning groups, or gender and sexuality learning groups. Materials needs are very flexible and can be equipped to meet any budget, environment, or accessibility needs.
