The Radical and Contentious Life of Simone Weil

Simone Weil was a philosopher and activist whose writings have inspired and troubled generations of thinkers and poets, including Adrienne Rich, Anne Carson and Ilya Kaminsky. Others have found her to be offensive and even absurd. What can we make of her life and work for our own lives? Join us for a reading from Weil's essay on uses of force, with music and dance, followed by a discussion of her life, work and legacy.

Featuring: University of Wisconsin-Madison Profesoor Rachel Brenner, Center for Jewish Studies; Rita Mae Reese, Poet and ArtLitLab Co-Director; David Simmons, Fermat’s Last Theater Co; Eva Paddock, string bass; and Akiwele Burayidi, dance.

A co-production of Arts + Literature Laboratory and Fermat’s Last Theater Co.
