Live Cinema Live Music: MELDT

Mills Folly Microcinema presents Live Cinema Live Music: MELDT, an evening of experimental video, live music, and dance on Wednesday, March 29, 2023 at 7:00pm. Tickets are $15 ($10 student/ALL member) in advance online at https://livecinemalivemusic.bpt.me, and $20 at the door for everyone. Doors open at 6:30pm.

MELDT, a sprawling collaborative alchemic multi-sensory experience, will consist of live-mixed video projection from Aaron Granat and Dale Kaminski, with additional video material and analog projections by Heidi Johnson; electro-acoustic musical accompaniment from Tim Russell, Silas Ritchie and Shawn Pierce; and dance performances by Liz Sexe.

Upon entry you have the opportunity to share with us, by writing it down, a few sentences or a phrase on the topic of the evening. This is left up to your interpretation. These thoughts and phrases can be anonymous, and they may be integrated into in this evening of video, sound and dance, structured and improvised, moving from an organic state into the technological frontier and beyond.

MELDT has been organized by Heidi Johnson and Silas Ritchie, and it is the first installment of recurring Live Cinema Live Music multimedia performances featuring local film and video makers, musicians, and other artists at Mills Folly Microcinema.

ABOUT MILLS FOLLY MICROCINEMA

Mills Folly Microcinema showcases nationally recognized experimental film and video art work from the festival and microcinema circuit. We network with regional filmmakers and organizations to bring filmmakers and guest programmers to Madison for screenings. And we incubate local experimental filmmaking by providing screen time at Project Projection events.

Aaron Granat

Aaron Granat is a video artist, cinematographer, editor, and teacher of media production. Spanning live, multi-media performance, documentary, screen dance, experimental, and dramatic narrative, his work has been exhibited in museums, film festivals across the world, music venues large and small, planetariums, and billboards in city centers. Unbound by traditional forms and structures, Aaron seeks the interdisciplinary merging of practices, aestheticizing the creative process and the phenomena of reality in thought-provoking ways.

Heidi E. Johnson

Heidi E. Johnson is a Wisconsin born artist who has always loved to be involved in music, dance, theatre and visual arts in many forms. It’s been a few years since she has been able to scratch the itch for collaboration in this fashion and is excited to be able to work on MELDT, the first installment of Live Cinema Live Music at Mills Folly Microcinema. She was formerly involved with WYOU public access cable television in Madison, and she is currently on the Mills Folly Microcinema programming committee.

Dale Kaminski

Dale Kaminski (MFA UW-Madison 2012 ) is an artist that works with all forms of new technology. His interests are focused on the ways we can use technology communally to facilitate better interpersonal relations. His work has appeared in local, regional, national, international and intergalactic art shows and performance venues most recently at the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney, Australia. Dale is the director of the Arts Media Center at the University of Wisconsin - Whitewater campus where he directs many interdisciplinary projects that focus on the collaborative use of technology.

Shawn Pierce

Shawn Pierce began his education in music as a drummer around Dallas and Denton, Texas. He was a touring musician for many years before finding himself moving to Madison, Wisconsin where he continued his musical journey. While in Madison, not only has he continued to make records with bands and tour nationally, he has created soundscapes and musical pieces for everything from commercials for businesses to promos for public radio.

Silas Ritchie

Silas “Be” Ritchie, Milwaukee born, is an artist of many mediums. He works mainly with photography, experimental video, music, painting, poetry, and pottery. He was a professional cook for 15 years. Silas is about to celebrate his 10-year double lung transplant anniversary. He now focuses on health, mindfulness and creativity, in tandem with being a stay-at-home step-father.

Tim Russell

Tim Russell lives at the confluence of the aural and the visual. He currently serves as Music Director for the University of Wisconsin’s Dance Department. In 2019, Tim was selected as one of the Cowles Visiting Artists at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, a first for a Musician in the field of Dance. He has a vast catalogue of works specifically for choreography, most of which exist live, in collaboration with movement. His commitment to the nowness in performance led him to co-create/curate, along with choreographer Maria Gillespie, Hyperlocal MKE, a Music and Dance improvisation series that exists to this day in Milwaukee. His current curatorial project: Common Sage Arts, promotes multidisciplinary artists through carefully curated performances. Liz Sexe

Liz Sexe is the choreographer/artistic director of Liz Sexe Dance Company established in 2014. She is described as a “clean and efficient mover,” and having “toughness under her grace.” In her processes, tasks inspire poetic movement, game theory finds logical, yet often unexpected phrasing, and athletic dancing is paired with deep intentionality. Her choreographic work has been featured at the World Dance Alliance Festival in Honolulu, Hawaii, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Danceworks in Milwaukee, WI, and Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin in Spring Green, WI. She was an artist in residence at University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and the Bubbler at Madison’s Central Library. Most recently Liz is interested in curating and creating more opportunities for Dance in the greater Madison area. She has collaborated with Dane Arts, LunArts, and various local dance companies and organizations in Madison to ensure moving artists have more opportunities to show their work.
