Photobook Talk | Jon Horvath: This is Bliss

Arts + Literature Laboratory, PhotoMidwest, Wisconsin Book Festival, and FlakPhoto Projects will present a photobook talk with Milwaukee-based photographer Jon Horvath, discussing his book This is Bliss, on Saturday, August 3 at 2:00pm. Free admission, donations encouraged.

This Is Bliss (Yoffy Press, Fw: Books, 2022) is a transmedia narrative project investigating the vanishing roadside geography and culture of a rural Idaho town named Bliss.

The project considers how mythologies of place and happiness collide, and are frequently confounded, in a location with a complex narrative of booms and busts that reflects the complicated history of American Idealism and Manifest Destiny. All that remains in Bliss is two gas stations, a school, a church, a diner, and two saloons to service its 300 current residents. Through a thorough look at the contemporary landscape and its residents, This Is Bliss contrasts romantic visions of the American West with its contemporary reality and considers how the heights of idealism are envisioned on both a personal and cultural level.

Horvath's current exhibition at Arts + Literature Laboratory, drawn from the This is Bliss project, is on display on our second floor mezzanine through Friday, August 30, 2024.

Jon Horvath is an interdisciplinary artist and writer that routinely utilizes systems-based strategies within multimedia narrative projects.  Horvath entered the visual arts principally through the photographic medium and was influenced by his varied early formal education in creative fiction writing, philosophy, and composing music. His practice has expanded into the mixed use of photography, video, performance, sculptural objects, and other mediums, placed into a combined space to shape bodies of work reflecting his interest in open-ended, poetic narratives rooted in the exploration of how we build personal and cultural mythologies as a way to better understand the world around us.

Horvath’s work has been exhibited internationally in solo and group shows at venues including: The Print Center (Philadelphia), The Griffin Museum of Photography (Winchester, MA) FIESP Cultural Centre (Sao Paolo, Brazil), Gyeonggi Art Center (Suwon, South Korea), OFF Piotrkowska (Lodz, Poland...
