LunART: Winds of Change

Arts + Literature Laboratory welcomes special guest bassoonist Eleni Katz, for a first-time performance with LunART Chamber Music Collective members Iva Ugrcic (flute) and Alyona Waldo (piano) in a program called Winds of Change on Friday, November 8, 2024 at 7:00pm. Tickets are $30 general admission, $20 ALL Member, $10 students. Advance ticket information at the LunART website

Expect to be inspired by diverse works exploring the past and present of women composers, in this program fusing influences of African-American spirituals, Welsh folk music, and Eastern music traditions.

With a sound described as “uncannily human,” Katz’ training as a classical singer lends a “thoughtful and expressive” vocal quality to the bassoon. A distinguished alumna of University of Wisconsin-Madison, her multifaceted career has encompassed both chamber and orchestral music, and interdisciplinary arts, with performances as far as Bermuda and Carnegie Hall in New York City, in addition to regional appearances with Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra.

Audiences will experience a spectrum of music by women composers spanning the past 150 years, beginning in 19th century France. Trailblazer Louise Farrenc (1804-1875), whose music was programmed alongside Beethoven and Hector Berlioz, rallied for (and achieved) equal pay to her male counterparts and was the only woman professor appointed to the prestigious Paris Conservatory throughout the entire century. American Undine Smith Moore (1904-1989), hailed as the “Dean of Black Women Composers,” and the influential Welsh composer Grace Mary Williams (1906-1977) both developed distinct musical language akin with their cultural identities. Contemporary composers Lila Meretzky and Reena Esmail transport this one-of-a-kind program to the 21st century.

Don’t miss the launch of the LunART 2024-25 concert season!

The mission of LunART is to support, inspire, promote, and celebrate ALL women in the arts through public performances, exhibitions, workshops, and interdisciplinary collaboration; thus enriching our community and creating a welcoming space for learning and experimentation.
