TOWARD AN APOPHATIC GENEALOGY

TOWARD AN APOPHATIC GENEALOGY

Ann Arbor, 2020

I can't tell you who birthed Comfort,

Jeremiah, Janet, or Isaiah, but I am

here, ankle-deep in snow, in a here

no one I come from has every stepped,

might never step, foot on. I am here

in a here unlike the here they knew,

where nothing falls from the sky that

accumulates on sidewalks, white as

itself, until, soon, it assumes the color

of dirt. I was born not-here of parents

not born here from parents the same.

I would have started with the lacuna

between God and Adam's fingers

but that, too, is a contested territory.
