The rest of the country might celebrate LGBTQIA Pride in June but in Madison, we do things a bit differently. Join us as the Watershed Reading Series at Arts + Literature Laboratory celebrates Pride Month with a reading from poet Derrick Austin and prose writers Annette Langlois Grunseth, Kat Beyer, and Julia Van Susteren—writers who plumb the depths of the intersections of gender, sexuality, identity, and belonging.
2018 Pride Reading
Derrick Austin is the author of Tenderness (BOA Editions, 2021) and Trouble the Water (BOA Editions, 2016). His first chapbook, Black Sand, is recently out from Foundlings Press. He is a 2022-2023 Amy Lowell Poetry Traveling Scholar.
Kat Beyer is a writer, artist, singer, food sovereignty and climate activist, and mother of the Brave Cub. She* lives with fibromyalgia, a gang of unruly plants, and a pet Tesla in Madison, WI. (*Any pronoun except Late for Dinner.)
Annette Langlois Grunseth is a poet and advocate for human rights. Her work has been published in journals, books and anthologies in the Midwest, Oregon and Nova Scotia. Her chapbook Becoming Trans-Parent, One Family’s Journey of Gender Transition (Finishing Line Press 2017) was nominated for a Pushcart Prize in Poetry and the Society of Midland Authors Poetry Prize. She has earned awards for her poetry with Wisconsin Academy Review, Wisconsin People and Ideas and the Wisconsin Fellowship of Poets. She often writes poetry on the bike trail or in her kayak on northern lakes where her muse tags along, just for the exercise.
Julia Christine Van Susteren is an amateur writer living in Madison, Wisconsin, where she works in health insurance. A lifelong Midwesterner, she grew up in Southeastern Wisconsin and received a Bachelor's Degree in Journalism, Political Science, and Gender Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2014. Formerly a reporter, and having lived throughout the Midwest, her writing seeks to contrast individual perspectives within broad narratives. She is also an amateur road cyclist, and has had type 1 juvenile diabetes for fourteen years.
