Creating Compelling Characters | Arts + Literature Laboratory | Madison Contemporary Arts Center

Creating Compelling Characters

Harry Potter, Jane Eyre, Scout, Moon Girl, Hawkeye Pierce, and The Doctor--no matter the genre or medium, audiences want characters to care about. This 6-week ONLINE workshop will provide examples of compelling characters; tools—including action, interior monologue, and dialogue—to create your own; guide you through writing a scene; and provide written feedback on your work. This course is appropriate for aspiring or practicing novelists, graphic novelists, short story writers, and screenwriters. You’ll leave with the key to successful writing—a dynamic character readers can’t get enough of.

Garrett Riggs Florida writer

Garrett Riggs' work has been published in Quail Bell Magazine, Tampa Review, Bright Lights Film Journal, Mary: A Journal of New Writing, and Cineaste Magazine. He lives in Florida with his family and a herd of cats.
