Jon Mueller: Afterlife Cartoons

On Saturday, October 30, 2021 at 7:00pm, Arts + Literature Laboratory welcomes Afterlife Cartoons, a tour of drum songs by Jon Mueller presented to small audiences in safe environments. In these performances, Mueller will use melodic phrases, repetitive patterns, abrupt shifts, and dynamic energy to construct abstract narratives of sound that are felt rather than told. Mueller will be joined in Madison by classically trained musician Barry Paul Clark (bassist in Field Report, Tontine Ensemble, Lady Cannon, Argopelter, Tony Catania Trio). Andrew Fitzpatrick (Noxroy, Bon Iver, All Tiny Creatures, Volcano Choir) will open.

Due to the pandemic, seating will be limited and advance tickets are recommended. Tickets are $10 online in advance ($8 for students and ALL Members) at https://afterlifecartoons.bpt.me, or $15 at the door for everyone. Advance sales end 1 hour before the concert. Doors open at 6:30 pm. Please review ALL's COVID-19 policy before purchasing your ticket and again before attending the event, as it may be modified based on current public health recommendations.

Jon Mueller

Jon Mueller’s aim has been to move drums, percussion and rhythm from its anticipated backbeat to a central musical focus, something more intuitive and natural than usually imagined. Audiences throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, Japan, and the United Kingdom have experienced this idiosyncratic point of view as, paradoxically, both ‘cathartic’ and ‘meditative’. Notable solo performances have taken place at the Guggenheim Museum, New Museum, Musée des Beaux-Arts de Montréal, Alverno Presents, SXSW, Big Ears Festival, Hopscotch Fest and Witching Hour Festival.

From 2013-15, Mueller created and directed the multi-disciplinary project Death Blues. The project issued four critically acclaimed recordings. Rolling Stone cited non-fiction as one of the ‘20 Best Avant Albums of 2014’. Ensemble, created with multi-instrumentalist William Ryan Fritch, was featured on NPR’s ‘First Listen’.

Outside of his solo work, Mueller has performed and recorded with Mind Over Mirrors... Read More
