Shifting Perspectives | Arts + Literature Laboratory | Madison Contemporary Arts Center

Shifting Perspectives

In collaboration with LAB^4 Community Curators at the Arts + Literature Laboratory, join us for Shifting Perspectives, an improvisational performance by six dancers and musicians, on Thursday, May 29, 7:30pm. Free admission.

Performing together for the first time, six artists will collaborate within a structure designed to encourage a variety of playful and poignant encounters, each with different combinations of their chosen art forms: saxophonist, vocalist, dancer, pianist, tap dancer. Improvisation is at the heart of this collaboration, exploring shifting perspectives, arrangements, re-arrangements, listening, leading, following, all within the context of today’s world.  While each artist brings a unique perspective, background, and chosen art form, common threads emerge among the themes they explore. The audience will be seated in the round, creating an intimacy that encourages both a sense of witnessing as well as being participants on a collective journey.

Performers:

Katherine Kramer, tap, movement, vocals, composition
Sally DeBroux – vocals, composition
Leah Reinardy - piano, melodica
Sean Frenzel - tap
Abby Taylor - movement, vocals
Austin Cebulske – saxophone, guitar

Dancer Katherine Kramer

Katherine Kramer’s work is rooted in building connections and community, encouraging intimacy, and promoting the value of artistic play as a tool in creating a more humane world. She has experienced a rich and varied career with exceptional collaborators. She is proud to have received numerous grants and award, including the prestigious “Hoofer Award” from the American Tap Dance Foundation for her lifetime commitment to the art of tap dance.  She has recently been invited to house her artistic archive at the NY Public Library Jerome Robbins Dance Division, as well as to be a part of their Oral History Project, which will include a 6 hour interview with her on her life in dance.

Sally De Broux is a vocalist, improviser, and teacher/facilitator who brings joy, playfulness, and musicality to her sessions. She leads vocal improvisation and circle singing inspired by the work of her mentors, renowned vocalists Rhiannon and Bobby McFerrin. Based in Madison, she performs with a variety of jazz musicians and enjoys collaborating with other artists who share a love of improvisation. Sally is passionate about helping singers of all ages and experience levels find freedom and connection through vocal exploration. Her work emphasizes improvisation and group singing as pathways to creativity, community, and personal expression—making music accessible and meaningful for everyone.

Currently, Sean lives in Madison, Wisconsin where he performs with Primrose Tap Ensemble and serves as the Operations Manager at the Hancock Center for Creative Arts Therapies. Multi-instrumentalist Leah Reinardy

Leah Reinardy is a multi-instrumentalist, improviser, and composer whose creative work is most informed by limitations. As a disabled artist, they view their limitations as parameters that spark the creative process rather than barriers to overcome. Leah studied percussion and jazz piano at Hope College in Holland, Michigan, where they served as musical director for tap master Heather Cornell for 2 years. This transformative experience led them to intentionally seek collaborations with dancers of many disciplines including tap, samba, maracatu, and ballet.
