CSArt Madison 2018

ALL is pleased to announce the artists for the second season of CSArt Madison—southern Wisconsin’s first Community Supported Art program: Hannah O’Hare Bennett, Derrick Buisch, Luisa Fernanda Garcia-Gomez, Erica Hess, Leslie Iwai, Lesley Numbers, Leslie Smith III, Kayla Story, Andy Villanueva, and SPOOKY BOOBS COLLECTIVE. Information about the artists is available by clicking the links at the bottom of this page.

Much like Community Supported Agriculture programs, in which shareholders invest in a local farm and receive shares of fruits and vegetables, CSArt Madison asks shareholders to invest directly in the arts community with a ‘buy local’ mentality. Participating artists—selected by the ALL Curatorial Board through an open call process—will each receive a stipend to create 61 “shares” for the program (50 for shareholders, nine for the other participating artists, one to keep, and one for ALL's permanent collection). Interested collectors or “shareholders” purchase a share, and in return, receive one piece of locally-produced artwork from each of the ten featured artists.

ALL first launched CSArt Madison in 2017, in the interest of supporting the local culture and creative economy of Dane County. All fifty shares available were sold, and it is expected that shares will sell out quickly again this year. Shares cost $300 and will be available for purchase online or in the gallery beginning Monday, April 2. On June 9, 2018, shares will be distributed at a pick-up event and exhibition reception providing opportunities for artists and patrons to further connect. ALL will also organize studio visits to take place during April for artists to receive feedback and support from the Curatorial Board, and for the public to learn more about the artists.

The goals of CSArt Madison are to support artists and to create an engaged community of local arts supporters. CSArt supports artists: in the creation of new work, to establish relationships with local collectors and patrons, and to participate in the launch of an exciting new model of art support and distribution. CSArt shareholder benefits include multiple works of art from local emerging and mid-career artists at a fantastic value. Additionally, CSArt shareholders have the opportunity to develop relationships with the local artists and art community, discover new artists, explore a variety of disciplines and support artists’ careers and a vibrant community.

CSArt Madison is based on a national model of art support and distribution developed by Springboard for the Arts, which has been successfully implemented in over 40 cities across the country. ALL’s unique addition to the model includes an exhibition, where participating artists are given the opportunity to display larger-scale works (different from works in the CSArt shares) at ALL during a month-long exhibition from June 9 to June 30, 2018. The pick-up event on June 9 will coincide with an opening reception for the exhibition, providing an opportunity for the general public to view the work and meet the participating artists.

I grapple with external discord through my art, often creating the same object over and over again in very different materials. My installations are an opportunity for viewers to perform a sort of mental archaeology of their own, seeking connections between the strange objects I present to them.

Derrick Buisch

A painting professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison since 1997, Buisch has exhibited in many national and regional museum exhibitions including the Tory Folliard Gallery, James Watrous Gallery, Wisconsin Triennials, and University Gallery of the Center for Art & Theatre at Southern Georgia University. Buisch’s new site-specific paintings were included in the current 2016 Wisconsin Triennial at the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art, Madison, WI. Buisch is a recipient of a 2017 Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters & Sculptors Grant.

Luisa Fernanda Garcia-Gomez (Photo Credit: Jennifer Bastian)

Growing up in the violent and turbulent environment of Colombia, I developed a fascination with the single explosive instant. I record these shattered moments through paper and cloth drawings that utilize colorful motifs.

I use metal, wood, cloth, concrete, and paper to build objects that abstractly address impermanence and the body. I am interested in the stories objects can tell and how these things can orient us in time and space.

Though I work conceptually, my structures and compositions are grounded in my education in mathematics, chemistry and architecture. I create work that exists spatially with an emphasis in installation, sculpture, and design.

Lesley Numbers (Photo Credit: Jennifer Bastian)

Lesley Anne Numbers is a printmaker, illustrator, and art educator based in Madison, Wisconsin. She creates prints for people and organizations she loves, teaches workshops at the library, and paints murals around town. She has taught art classes for all ages in a variety of non-profit and community settings and screen printing at The Center for Printing Arts at Madison College, and has sold work under the name Patchwork Printshop. With a background in art education and a lifelong love for old objects and the outdoors, she finds inspiration in children’s artwork, vintage textiles and scientific illustrations, and all of the beautiful forms, colors, and patterns found in nature. Other sources of inspiration include: music, poetry,... Read More

My practice investigates the history of modern painting with reference to material specificity, application, and pictorial perception. While my work often appropriates past and sometimes forgotten artistic histories, my goal is to generate works that exhibit social agency, perpetuating an existence uninhibited by social class, ethnicity, religion or any limiting factor.

Kayla Story (Photo Credit: Jennifer Bastian)

I am endlessly fascinated with people, and through my practice of photography and installation, I seek to explore the different devices humans employ to understand themselves, where they come from, and how they fit into societies.

Andy Villanueva (Photo Credit: Jennifer Bastian)

As a Mexican-American who has lost touch with certain aspects of my heritage through assimilation, I explore Mexican imagery oriented between pre-Columbian and Colonial occupation, through a contemporary and nuanced lens that refers to a mix of horror and science fiction.

SPOOKY BOOBS COLLECTIVE (Photo Credit: Jennifer Bastian)

SPOOKY BOOBS COLLECTIVE is a feminist collective that uses art, language, and design to visualize the trivialization of women’s experiences. SBC’s work is manifested through art installations, performances, printed material, social media campaigns, and social interactions.
