Artist Statement

Betty was the youngest of Margaret and Zachary Taylor's five daughters. It was written that Betty attended her father's inaugural ball in a simple white dress, with a flower in her hair. Betty took on the role as first lady after her mother declined.

I wanted to do a painting that was for Margaret Taylor, one that would bring her joy. Margaret's life was full of many losses, many moves, and many children. I think Margaret would want us to know that Betty worked as first lady. She must have been so grateful and proud of her.
