Artist Statement

Married at 16 to the love of her life, Andrew Johnson, Eliza taught him how to do math. She owned enslaved people, liked her scrapbooks and had tuberculosis. Also, there was that impeachment problem…

About the Artist

A lifelong Wisconsinite, Mauree received her Art Education degree from UW-La Crosse. She taught art, worked in television and, lastly, for non-profits. Her art was mainly in textiles. In 2013, she had an incomplete spinal cord injury, was paralyzed from the waist down and could no longer do her textiles. So, she started painting again. Her paintings have been in exhibits throughout Wisconsin. She lives in Milwaukee, paints, advocates for people with disabilities and is a docent at the Milwaukee Art Museum.
