Artist Statement
I chose the materials to reflect the truly humble beginnings of both Fillmores and specifically Abigail’s interests. While in the most public of positions, Abigail greatly preferred the company of books, gardens and salon gatherings of prominent writers and artists of the time. Before the First Lady was its own profession, she enjoyed the intellectual atmosphere, contributing to her husbands decision making and establishing the first white house library. The piece is constructed of wood reminiscent of bookcases, and opens to be able to be read as a book. While considered "boring" in some ways, her keen intellect and avid interests truly make her notable among the early first ladies. I hope the scale and quiet intimacy of the piece is reflective of Abigail's personality and vocation as an educator.
