Artist Statement

Rising from Plains represents the life of Rosalynn Carter. Rosalynn was born in Plains and except for her husband’s military career and time in Atlanta and Washington, D.C. she has always lived in Plains. She really is an example of “bloom where you are planted”. When she was born in 1927 Plains had a population of approximately 450, in 2018 the population was 721. Despite the small-town roots, she went on to be one of the most accomplished and celebrated women of her time. I chose to represent only some of her accomplishments in my piece; there was not room for them all. We have donated to the Carter Center which she co-founded with her husband, so the larger images come from their Christmas cards. The small images represent her hobbies.

About the Artist

As a photographer I have had many solo shows and awards but during the pandemic I have been stretching and learning watercolor painting, so the background of my piece is a watercolor painting I did to represent Plains and the peanut farm.

I currently have work in two online exhibits, WRAP – Madison where I won a State Exhibit award and Wisconsin Visual Artists “It’s Changed Us in So Many Ways.” Notable previous solo exhibits include at Lt. Governor Barbara Lawton’s office, Frank Llyod Wright Visitor’s Center, Madison Mayor’s office, Monona Terrace Gift Shop, UW Memorial Union, and the Wisconsin Art’s Board Gallery.
We have been supporters of Forward Theater from the beginning, so I am really pleased to be able to contribute to this exhibit and looking forward to the play. If my piece is sold any proceeds above costs will be donated to the Carter Center.
