Artist Statement

The sobriquet “Lemonade Lucy” belies the intelligence of Lucy Ware Webb Hayes, the first wife of a President to earn a college degree. Her egalitarian philosophy embraced the connection of humanity and the natural world through music, via the strum of her guitar and the trill of her birdcalls.

About the Artist

Virginia Rose is a multimedia artist who expresses herself in the realms of music, theatre, performance art, photography, and the spoken word. Her forte is the epiphany of the costumed body. She is a singer, guitarist, and songwriter in the music duo Essensual Beatz, whose eclectic repertoire includes her original compositions.

Her photographs have been exhibited at the Wisconsin Triennial, Promega, Integrated Art Group, and Absolutely Art. In 2019, she received the Westside Art Project Award for her photography. Previously, her work received a Purchase Award and became part of the Wisconsin Union Directorate art collection. Rose was an Artist-In-Residence for UW Hillel's Madison Jewish Artists' Laboratory during 2013-14.
